Berlin. Jesse Owens is running away\u2014quite literally\u2014with a bunch of Gold Medals. But he\u2019s not the only American to do this. Marjorie Gestring has just taken Gold in the 3-meter springboard. And\u2014get this\u2014she\u2019s just 13 years old! The Olympic Committee\u2019s chairman is about to drape the ribbon-and-medal over her neck when several of her trainers step forward. \u201cHey, hold on there!\u201d they shout, the head trainer grabbing the ribbon from the presenter\u2019s hands. \u201cY\u2019all can\u2019t give that to her! She made all her practices back home in the States, but she\u2019s missed a bunch of them in the past couple of weeks. We can\u2019t let you give a medal to somebody who doesn\u2019t show up, can we?\u201d So Miss Gestring is told to get off the riser and go sit down. \u201cYou can try again after we see you showing up more,\u201d the head trainer throws over his shoulder as he walks back to the benches.<\/p>\n<p><em>IMAGINE\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Harvard\u2019s dean steps to the microphone. \u201cLadies and gentlemen,\u201d he begins, \u201cwe are happy to announce that, at age 16, Jonathan Stone has successfully completed the entire curriculum for the Bachelor of Arts degree.\u201d There\u2019s a hush over the audience\u2026the anticipation of something unique. This would make Jonathan the youngest person in the history of The Crimson to ever accomplish this. \u201cBut, ladies and gentlemen,\u201d the dean continues, \u201cthe board of this great institution has reached the conclusion that Mister Stone isn\u2019t quite mature enough to understand the significance of his accomplishment. \u201cSo, Jonathan,\u201d he says, glancing downward to the bright-eyed young man sitting in the first row, \u201ccome back in five years and we\u2019ll award you your degree.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>IMAGINE\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnais Caradeux wins the World Cup in freestyle skiing!\u201d the PA system blares. \u201cAnais is just 15 years old,\u201d says the disembodied voice. The awards committee steps forward with the cup\u2014a splendid piece of engraved Sterling. \u201cNot so fast there!\u201d the voice says. \u201cAnais didn\u2019t show enough spirit on the half-pipe. The committee doesn\u2019t feel he\u2019s ready to receive this gift from us.\u201d A pall of apprehension sweeps over the crowd. \u201cSo, Anais, why don\u2019t you come back next year and try again. And maybe show a bit more spirit next time?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>IMAGINE\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p>You\u2019re a Scout who\u2019s just completed everything for Eagle, when a bunch of seriously misguided buffoons, stuffed full of false self-importance, start building a road block that has nothing whatsoever to do with the stated requirements.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Andy<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Have a question?
