(<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Art Aigner<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">, CM, <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Greater <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Niagara Frontier Council<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">, NY)<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">If the Cubs are carrying the flags single-file (one behind the other) then the American flag always leads.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> If the two carrying the flags are side by side, then the American flag is always to its own right, relative to the direction of travel.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> This means that someone in the front of the room would see the American flag on the left, facing him.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> Side by side, when the flags reach the front of the room, the American flag crosses in front of all other flags and is placed in the flag stand that&#8217;s to the audience&#8217;s left but its own right, facing the audience.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> Single-file, the American flag simply goes to the left, so it&#8217;s facing the audience from its own right.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Dear Andy:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Many years ago I <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">was the<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> Scoutmaster <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">of the troop I grew up in.<\/span><\/strong><strong><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> After <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">having <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">serv<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">ed on my district and council committees for about 15 years, I\u2019ve elected to return to my troop as an ASM. The current Scoutmaster&#8217;s son will be aging out soon and so <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">he (the Scoutmaster) is making rumblings that it\u2019<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">s time for him to step down.<\/span><\/strong><strong><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> I\u2019ve told <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">our<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> C<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">ommittee <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">C<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">hair<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> that I<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u2019<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">d be the new SM if no one else step<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">s<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> up.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">When I was <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Scoutmaster before, <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">I feel that I did a lot of things<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u2014like The Patrol Method\u2014<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">correctly<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">and <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">some<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> things<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> maybe not so well\u2014like <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">issuing <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u201c<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">edicts<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u201d to get things accomplished and creating rules for advancement as well as other things.<\/span><\/strong><strong><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> One rule I had<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> was the \u201c<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">double-dinner rule<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">,\u201d which<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> stipulated that a patrol could<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">n\u2019<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">t use a dinner menu<\/span><\/strong><strong><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">more than once<\/span><\/strong><strong><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">in the<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> regular S<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">couting season (Sept<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">ember through <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">June), my intent <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">being <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">to teach <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">menu planning <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">diversity<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">; but it came across as an <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u201c<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">edict.\u201d <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Currently<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">, the <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">t<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">roop <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">committee is holding <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">board of review only <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">three times a year<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">, with the further stipulation that<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> no Scout can advance more than one rank at each review, <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">regardless of the <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">rank <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">requirements he<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u2019s completed<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">, and I\u2019d want to correct or adjust this.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">So, <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">if a Scoutmaster is a &#8220;mild supervisor,&#8221; how does <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">he<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> insist on <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">following<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> BSA standards and policies without coming across as draconian or dictatorial?<\/span><\/strong><strong><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">For instance, h<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">ow would <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">I insist on the Patrol Method being used effectively without seeming like it\u2019s an \u201cedict\u201d? (Steve <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Sassi<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">, <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Theodore Roosevelt Council, NY<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">)<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Let&#8217;s start here: Who runs the troop?<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> If you said, &#8220;The Patrol Leaders Council, led by the Senior Patrol Leader,&#8221; you&#8217;ve got it right.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> The Scoutmaster&#8217;s in the background, guiding, mentoring, and coaching the troop&#8217;s youth leaders, primarily the SPL. So, my first suggestion is for you, any ASMs, and the members of the committee to get out there and take (or re-take) the training for your positions, including Scoutmaster-specific and the Troop Committee Challenge.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> This is where you&#8217;ll all learn together such things as the unreasonableness of establishing &#8220;edicts from on high&#8221; and how boards of review are conducted as often as necessary on an as-needed basis, including back-to-back reviews for Scouts who have completed all requirements for, let&#8217;s say, Second Class <\/span><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\">and <\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-size: small;\">First Class, because one of the committee&#8217;s most important responsibilities is to encourage, not retard, advancement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Menu&#8221; edicts&#8221;?<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> Personally, I wouldn&#8217;t bother<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">, b<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">ecause Scouts get bored with same-old, same-old time after time and will make menu changes all by themselves.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> Plus, if you&#8217;re truly using The Patrol Method, one patrol will start cooking something new and the others will see this and ask themselves, Hey, why can&#8217;t <\/span><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\">we <\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-size: small;\">do something like that, next time!&#8221;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Plus, when you and your ASM cook a gourmet dinner for yourselves, your Scouts will spot this and take away some good ideas&#8230; they may even ask, &#8220;How do you do that, on the trail?&#8221;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> This is how you guide&#8230; <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">By example<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">(<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Works much better than barking orders!<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">&#8220;Insisting&#8221; on The Patrol Method?<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> Where&#8217;s the &#8220;insisting&#8221; part?<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> The troop is merely the &#8220;shell&#8221; in which patrols operate. Without The Patrol Method, you&#8217;re simply not delivering Boy Scouting. Yes, you&#8217;re delivering <\/span><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\">something<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-size: small;\">, but it&#8217;s definitely not Boy Scouting.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> So, if it&#8217;s not, now, the troop needs to organize itself into standing patrols that hang together, hike together, do meal-planning together, and camp together on-site.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> They also arrange their own transportation, have patrol flags,<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> wear patrol medallions, have regular patrol elections, and so forth.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> Eliminate this essential element and you have a bunch o&#8217; boys in tan shirts, but you don&#8217;t have Boy Scouting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Good decisions spring from experience; experience comes from learning from our not-so-hot decisions.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> Simple as that!<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Hi Andy,<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">As a newly <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u201cde-throned\u201d Akela, I&#8217;m taking deep breaths and trying to stay out of the way of my new Boy Scout<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> son<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">&#8216;s advancement.<\/span><\/strong><strong><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> OK, that&#8217;s a little more melodramatic than reality, but I\u2019m trying to keep in mind Boy Scouts isn\u2019t \u201cWebelos 3.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><strong><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> That said, could you clarify for me a<\/span><\/strong><strong><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">something about Merit Badges<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u2026<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">? If a requirement<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">, for instance,<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> says, &#8220;visit a<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u2026\u201d <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">or \u201creport on what you learned<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u2026\u201d <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">does that mean the <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Merit Badge C<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">ounselor must attend with the <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Scout, o<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">r could <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">a<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> requirement <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">like that <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">be fulfilled by the Scout attending with a group of other <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Scouts <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">or as a family outing?<\/span><\/strong><strong><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">t<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">roop <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">my son joined <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">is a great troop and all the boys who just crossed<\/span><\/strong><strong><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">over are well on their way to earning<\/span><\/strong><strong><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Tenderfoot. My guy&#8217;s been having fun and didn&#8217;t even realize until the last meeting that he only needed <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">three <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">more requirements to earn Tenderfoot!<\/span><\/strong><strong><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">(New Scout Mom)<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">When you get it that Boy Scouts isn&#8217;t &#8220;Webelos 3,&#8221; you&#8217;re on your way to being the best kind of parent a Scout can have!<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> I&#8217;m delighted to learn that your son&#8217;s doing well and is completing requirements to advance to his first rank and beyond.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> As you review requirements for rank advancement, be sure to let <\/span><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\">him <\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-size: small;\">tell <\/span><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\">you<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-size: small;\">, and not the other way around!<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> This is the time for you to sit in the back of the Scouting &#8220;car&#8221; while your son does the driving.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Merit badges<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> are<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> available to be worked on and earned at any time (that is, there are no age, size, rank, or other restrictions on merit badges\u2014any Scout can earn any merit badge any time he chooses). After your son decides what merit badge he\u2019d like to earn, his Merit Badge Counselor will meet with him and they\u2019ll discuss how<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> he\u2019ll go about completing the<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> requirements.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> With specific regard to field trips and such, the Scout is expected to take the initiative for himself.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> Unlike den outings, Merit Badge Counselors almost never accompany the Scout on field trips, visits to locales, events, designated buildings, etc.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> The Scout will do this on his own, usually with a Scout buddy. Merit badges aren&#8217;t anything <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">parents<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> need to fret about, or consider &#8220;helping&#8221; <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">their <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> son with&#8230; He&#8217;ll do just fine by himself, and your role 99.9% of the time will simply be to get him to his Merit Badge Counselor&#8217;s home, and back again.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Dear <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Andy,<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>D<span style=\"font-size: small;\">oes a Life Scout meet the requirement of being active<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">, who <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">rarely comes to troop meetings and hasn&#8217;t been on a <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">c<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">ampout in 16 months?<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> (Name &amp; Council Withheld)<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">OK, let\u2019s start here: <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">H<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">ow long has he been a Life Scout?<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> Next, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">in the past 16 months, how many merit badges has he earned<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">, and has he done an Eagle project?<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> Finally, what leadership position has he held for a minimum of 6 months since becoming a Life Scout?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">He earned Life rank <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">two years and two months ago. He\u2019s earned no merit badges since then, and he\u2019s scheduled to start his Eagle project in about two weeks. He was Quartermaster \u201c<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Mentor<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u201d\u2014a Scoutmaster-assigned leadership project\u2014for a year and three months after becoming a Life Scout.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">OK, this is a soluble situation&#8230; It begins with this Scout having served actively in his troop, while a Life Scout, for a period of 15 months while carrying out <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> that Scoutmaster-assigned troop leadership project. This means that &#8220;active for 6 months since becoming a Life Scout&#8221; is now an academic discussion: It was accomplished a year ago. Moreover, since this Scout will need to earn the balance of the merit badges<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> required and also <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> carry out his<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> Eagle <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">project, including <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> recruiting<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> and managing his <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">helpers, he&#8217;ll be devoting a lot more time to Scouting that may be immediately evident.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> In short, &#8220;active&#8221; is a non-issue right now and will remain a non-issue in the future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The best support you can provide this young man is to encourage his planning out which merit badges he&#8217;ll complete before the summer, which he&#8217;ll work to complete during the summer, and what &#8220;strays&#8221; he&#8217;ll finish off in the early fall. You can also provide guidance and support to him as he carries out<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> his service project in such a way that it will be accepted by his board of review for Eagle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">We&#8217;re here to guide young men to success.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> We&#8217;re not here to stick monkey wrenches in their advancement gear<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> works. Also, what\u2019s the BSA <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">policy on taking these youth out of school to <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">attend our trips<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">I welcome family participation, and we need the mother for our co-ed group. At this point<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">,<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> the mother and father are<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">n\u2019<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">t going to sign up to be registered <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">volunteers, <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">and the younger brother can<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u2019t <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">be left at home wh<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">ile<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> the parents go on these outings.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">What do we do here? (Name &amp; Council Withheld)<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">To volunteer in the newest BSA <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> unit-level position<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u201cScoutParent Unit Coordinator\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">is<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> to take on some major responsibilities, including \u201cHost an ac<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">tivity or a pool party for the <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> ship, go on a trip with the ship as an adult chaperone, be a consultant on a career or hobby by teaching the skills of your trade, be one of the key adult leaders involved with the ship, offer your property, business, etc. for activities, assist with unit fund-raising<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">, support <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> your Sea Scout about their program and provide guidance and participation with them on meetings and events projects, encourage other youth to invite their friends to join the program and help with sign-ups<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">, a<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">ttend and help provide support to annual or regular parent involvement night events<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">, o<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">ffer your talents and other organization resources in support of the program<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">, be one of the key adult leaders involved with the ship, help collect a Program Capability Inventory or Talent Survey from all families and other community resources in support of the program, encourage and support youth in leadership and mentoring, assist with transportation on activities or meetings.\u201d I certainly would encourage at least one of these parents to get involved in a more formal and regular basis than merely monitoring their daughter and tending to their under-age (for Sea Scouting) son.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">However, beyond this, there<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">&#8216;s a fundamental issue you&#8217;ll need to come to terms with, and when you do, everything else that flows out of it will be crystal clear: <\/span><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">What kind of youth program do you wish to deliver<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">?<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">You see, if you wish to deliver the Sea Scouting program <\/span><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\">as written<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-size: small;\">, then you&#8217;ll need to make some important decisions about families such as the one you<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u2019ve<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> describe<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">d. That&#8217;s because Sea Scouting is a <\/span><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\">youth<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> program; it&#8217;s not a &#8220;family&#8221; program.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> In fact, I&#8217;m going to challenge you<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> here<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">: Read any issue<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">of the <\/span><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Sea Scout Manual<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> or the <\/span><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Handbook for Skippers<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> that&#8217;s been written in the past 98 years and find the phrase, &#8220;&#8230;the Sea Scout and his\/her parent\/father\/mother&#8230;&#8221; <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> The bottom line is that you won&#8217;t.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> Sea Scouting isn&#8217;t a &#8220;Dad n&#8217; Lad&#8221; program; it&#8217;s not a &#8220;Mom n&#8217; Me&#8221; program<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u2014It&#8217;s a youth program in which the young people interact, learn from, and have fun and adventures with and among themselves, under the quiet and unobtrusive guidance of their Skipper.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">If Sea Scouting had been intended to be a family program, then the manuals and handbooks would have been written that way.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> But they weren&#8217;t, and that&#8217;s not by accident.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Sea Scouting&#8217;s goal is to <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">encourage and <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">instill personal competence, personal accomplishment, independence, and inter-dependence among young people<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">, by creating an environment in which young people are responsible for and to themselves; its purpose is not to &#8220;strengthen family ties&#8221; by &#8220;doing things together as families.&#8221;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> (And it\u2019s certainly not intended \u201cfor the whole family, regardless of age.\u201d)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The <\/span><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Sea Scout Manual<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> doesn&#8217;t have a single sentence in it about &#8220;&#8230;you and your parent&#8230;&#8221;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> The <\/span><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Handbook for Skippers<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> doesn&#8217;t have a single sentence in it about &#8220;&#8230;the Sea Scouts and their parents&#8230;&#8221;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> This is absolutely<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">deliberate.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> It is also not to be meddled with.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> Meddle with this one and you may have a fine program for youth and their parents; you simply won&#8217;t have Sea Scouting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">This isn&#8217;t about my &#8220;opinion&#8221;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u2014My only &#8220;opinion&#8221; is that we need to strive to understand the principles underpinning all Scouting programs and then make the conscious decision to deliver the Scouting program we&#8217;ve volunteered to deliver as it&#8217;s written and designed to be delivered.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> Once you&#8217;ve done this, you&#8217;ll know exactly what decisions you&#8217;ll need to make.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Thank<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">s for the advice. <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">It<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u2019s funny that just the other day a fellow Scouter<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> told me about a Camporee <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">at which some of<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> the parents <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">were upset with him <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">because he did<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">n\u2019t have <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u201cfamily activities.\u201d <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">His re<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">sponse to these parents was straightforward: This is a <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Boy S<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">cout camp<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">ing experience; not a family camp-out.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">I<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> think I<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> need to<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> get the mother to register as <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">a Mate, <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">so she can accompany the daughter <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">and<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">additional girls that will join as the ship\u2019s membership grows, with the understanding that she\u2019ll need to take training<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">, and I need to tell the f<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">ather <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">the<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> same <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">thing. The people on the review also had problems with this Scout\u2019s inability to recite the Scout Oath and Law correctly. I pointed out <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">to them <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">that making decisions as to what <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">they think <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">constitutes &#8220;active participation&#8221; is a particularly dicey thing to do, so they moved on<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">, although <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">somewhat begrudgingly.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Now the hard part<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">..<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">. This <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">S<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">cout&#8217;s 18th birthday is now upon him<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">, less than two<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> months from the date of his Life <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">board of review<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">. He <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">lacks <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">six merit badges, three of which are required for Eagle, and his leadership service <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">project. Plus, he\u2019ll clearly <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">not meet the <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">six month participation and <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">leadership position tenure required between Life and Eagle ranks, before <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">his 18<\/span><\/strong><strong><sup><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">th<\/span><\/sup><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">birthday. His<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> father is now aggressively seeking an extension beyond <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">the <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">18<\/span><sup><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">th<\/span><\/sup><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">birthday from our council<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">, and it\u2019s<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> probable that the troop committee will be asked for a letter <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">showing<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> support<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> of this request<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">. The <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">father\u2019s rationale for requesting <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">the extension is <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">an <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">ADHD diagnosis.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Well over a year ago<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">, at the request of this father,<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> I worked up a specific timeline for this young man, specifying <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">the <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">deadline <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">dates <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">that he\u2019d need to <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">meet in order to complete his advancement to Eagle before his 18<\/span><sup><span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">th<\/span><\/sup><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> birthday. Now, despite this, it seems that it\u2019s now <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">simply too<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> late in the game<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">, despite the current <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">flurry of activity.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">I<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u2019m personally not in <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">favor<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> of deviati<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">ng<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> from BSA advancement <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">requirements, and I believe that, in this case, such a deviation would b<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">e a disservice to a long line of <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Scout<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">s who have<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> earned their ranks while staying within the boundaries of BSA policy. Moreover, we have, and have had, <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Scouts in the troop with <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">physical and\/or <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">mental <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">challenges <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">equally if not more daunting who have asked for no special favors of any kind. Nevertheless, I feel honor-bound to provide objective input to the committee on this matter, so any insights you can share<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> would be much appreciated.<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> (Name &amp; Council Withheld)<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Question for you: Has the ADHD &#8220;card&#8221; ever been played before?<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> If not, this might be an uphill climb for that family. According to the BSA,<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">they do need to have written documentation from a licensed medical professional, stating that this young man has a permanent disability, in order to request special consideration. <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> Since the disability is, apparently, in the mental arena, an evaluation statement by a certified educational administrator will likely also be required.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> If they don&#8217;t have these, the show&#8217;s over.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> If they do have them, they&#8217;ll need to present them to the council advancement committee for consideration (see page 13 of the BSA&#8217;s <\/span><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\">2010 Boy Scout Requirements<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> book).<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> This, however, typically applies to the ranks below Star; not to Star, Life, or Eagle.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> If they&#8217;ve never done this before, in the past seven years, the council advancement committee may take this into consideration.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> At any rate, the full procedure is described in the book I mentioned. of something so seminal as this, it&#8217;s already too late.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">You see, the only purpose to being a Scouting volunteer is to help boys and young men <\/span><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\">succeed<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-size: small;\">; it&#8217;s not to find ways for them to fail.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> When adults create ways for boys to fail, they&#8217;re, in effect, anti-Scouting in principle.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> But to change this &#8220;from within&#8221; with course adjustments all along the way, so that, in the end, all Scouts succeed.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">To wait in ambush at the end of the trail, in order to tell a Scout that, well, he just hasn&#8217;t lived up to expectations, is about as anti-Scouting in principle <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> and spirit <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">as one can get.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">So, my personal suggestion here is to consider ending your quest to shovel water upstream with a pitchfork and, with a few other parents, go out and visit other nearby troops, till you find one that gets it right, and then transfer your sons into that troop as fast as you can!<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> The people associated with the troop your son\u2019s in at the moment should be\u2014as B-P himself observed\u2014taken out and shot.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Hello Andy,<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">I<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u2019m having a problem trying to figure out what to do about our town\u2019s troop.<\/span><\/strong><strong><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> I<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u2019m Committee <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">C<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">hair of the <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u201cfeeder\u201d <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">pack and my son will be going to this troop in two<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> years.<\/span><\/strong><strong><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">We\u2019ve recently <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">sent<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> five of our Webelos Scouts <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">to this troop and <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">all five have <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">either transferred <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">to another troop or dropped out of Scouts entirely, because they <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">were made to feel <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">like <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u201c<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">outsiders.<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u201d It seems that<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">, <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">on Webelos visits<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">,<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> the<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> troop just <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">plays game<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">s<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> for <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">about <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">45 minutes and <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">then does \u201cScouting things\u201d for maybe <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">about 20 minutes or so (<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">all <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">was <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">the same in the <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">three visits I&#8217;ve <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">made). So how <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">do we help the troop become a troop that we<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u2019d be proud to send our <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">boys<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> to and know they<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u2019<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">ll strive for great things?<\/span><\/strong><strong><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">I did pose this same question to our District Executive, but he just said that it\u2019ll probably<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> take a while to work itself out.<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Meanwhile, our chartered organization doesn\u2019t take much interest in either our pack or the troop they sponsor, too. (<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Eric Scarberry<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">, Simon <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Kenton Council<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">, OH)<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The first thing we need to keep in mind is that D.E.&#8217;s are virtually powerless when it comes to the quality of the Scouting program a unit delivers<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u2014so don&#8217;t blame your D.E. for giving the appearance of shirking what he can&#8217;t control!<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> Responsibility for program quality ultimately lies with the chartered organization<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u2014that&#8217;s where the buck stops<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">and so if they&#8217;re really not much involved, this may be an insoluble situation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> However, since you have two years before your own decision needs to be made, you may want to consider getting yourself into the position of Chartered Organization Representative for <\/span><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\">both <\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> units\u2014the pack <\/span><em><span style=\"font-size: small;\">and<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> the troop.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> If you can do this, then you&#8217;re in control of all adult volunteers. As CR, y<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">ou can, for instance, insist that they all take training for their positions (and if they don&#8217;t, you can replace them with absolute impunity).<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> You can insist that the troop follow The Patrol Method to the letter, and that they use the Troop Meeting Plan<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">developed and run by the Patrol Leaders Council<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">for all troop meetings.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> You can do these things not by being &#8220;The Big Cheese&#8221; but by applying diplomatically gentle pressure&#8230;relentlessly.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> This way, in two years&#8217; time or, ideally, a lot less, this becomes a model troop that any boy would be excited to join and have fun in!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Understand this very clearly: You absolutely cannot change a corrupted organization &#8220;from within&#8221;<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">The only way to change it is from the top.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> So make your decisions ruthlessly, but carry them out <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> compassionately.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Dear A<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">ndy<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">,<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">My son applied to his <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Scoutmaster and troop committee for the rank of Eagle Scout, having met all the requirements including completing his <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">leadership service p<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">roject. The <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Scout<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">master refused to process his application<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">,<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> stating that my son did<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">n\u2019<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">t meet the troop\u2019s 75% attendance requirement, and he did<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">n\u2019<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">t meet the leadership requirements that the Scoutmaster wanted. When <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">my son<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> appealed th<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">is<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> decision <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">with<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> the council<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">, <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">the <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Scout<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">master and troop advancement chair <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">de-registered him, his brother, <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">and me<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">, and of course we appealed these actions as well. The c<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">ouncil advancement committee<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> stated that neither t<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">he troop\u2019s attendance requirement <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">nor its additional leadership requirements met with <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">BSA <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">national <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">policy, and that my son had, in fact, <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">exceeded the Eagle Scout <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">rank <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">requirements, granting his appeal and advanc<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">ing<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> him to the rank of Eagle Scout <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">in a<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> subsequent <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">council-level <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">board of review.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Unfortunately, however, the two troop leaders <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">now <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">refuse to recognize <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">my son\u2019s legitimate <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">advancement to <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">the rank of <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Eagle Scout and <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">will not <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">provide him a court of honor. He<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u2019<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">s now 18<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> years old. He <\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">received his Eagle<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> Scout documents, badge, and medal<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> in the mail.<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> I\u2019m s<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">eeking your advice and closure.<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> (Martin Jacobson<\/span><\/strong><strong><span style=\"font-size: small;\">)<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Congratulations to <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> your Eagle Scout son<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Th<span style=\"font-size: small;\">ere&#8217;s absolutely nothing whatsoever prohibiting you from celebrating his achievement.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> Schedule a date and time, choose a location (your home, church, or other place large enough to hold a crowd), and invite the Chair of the Council Advancement Committee and the members of your son\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">board of review to come and enjoy the festivities.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> In fact, you may even wish to ask the chair to make the actual presentation.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> Invite your son\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">best friends from the troop, any families that you&#8217;re close with, neighbors, his teachers and principal, local dignitaries, and your own Scouting friends.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> Use official Eagle Scout invitations (available at your local Scout shop or online at <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.scoutstuff.org\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> www.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Scout<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">stuff.org<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: small;\">), order a cake, and have a blast!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">As far as those two jerks are concerned forget &#8217;em.<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> They don&#8217;t deserve any consideration beyond remembering that throughout our lives we&#8217;re going to run into jerks (God must love jerks<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">He sure made <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">a lot <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">of &#8217;em!).<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> Here&#8217;s the important thing: <\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Your son<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\"> refused to be walked on, because he refused to lie down like a door mat! Instead, he took action and as a result the right outcome prevailed!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small;\">Hats off to all<\/span><span style=\"font-size: small;\">!
