Issue 481 – April 1, 2016

________________________________________
“Boy Scouts” have been featured in just a few movies in the past 60 or so years. Back in 1953 we had “Mister Scoutmaster,” with Clifton Webb as his usual crusty self, but his role plays off a boy who’s a Cub Scout. Then there was “Follow Me Boys,” a pretty accurate and nicely family-friendly 1966 movie starring Fred MacMurray. But Bruce Willis’s 1991 “The Last Boy Scout” had nothing at all to do with the movement. And of course, there was 2012’s “Moonrise Kingdom,” featuring a troop of “Khaki Scouts.” Most recently, “Scouts Guide To The Zombie Apocalypse” is an R-rated send-up that’s simultaneously gross, profane…and hilarious. Since none of these is current or precisely accurate, here are some fresh ideas for movies that could help audiences understand some of the nuances of just what Scouting’s all about…

WHO’S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF or “Our New Den Leader”

THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY or “My Eagle Project”

MASTER AND COMMANDER or “The Scoutmaster’s Handbook”

TWELVE ANGRY MEN or “Your Troop Committee At Work”

ANIMAL HOUSE or “Our New Venturing Crew”

THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK or “Boy-Led? Not A Chance!”

THELMA AND LOUISE or “When Den Leaders Go Bad”

BRAVEHEART or “We Just Elected You Popcorn Chair”

NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD or “Cub Scout Family Camping”

PSYCHO or “Meet Your Camp Ranger”

THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY or “Your Council’s Key 3”

JUDGMENT AT NUREMBURG or “My Favorite Board Of Review”

CADDYSHACK or “Camp Staff After Hours”

THE MAN WHO WOULD BE KING or “So Ya Wanna Be a Scoutmaster”

Happy Scouting!

Andy
