Here are some more Scouters’ thoughts on this… Dear Andy, I was reading in your April ’05 issue about the concern for visiting a Troop. Is it […]

Hi Andy, Is there a written restriction that disallows a Pack Committee Chairman from being it’s sister Troop’s Scoutmaster? (Jim Viser, UC, Colonial Virginia Council, Suffolk, VA) Yup, there sure is a “written restriction” on being chair of one unit and SM of another… It’s called…(are your ready)…divorce papers! Actually, despite the significant negative impact […]
Issue 50 – Mid-April 2005
Hi Andy, First, I want to thank you for your informative column. I’ve learned many things here that I’d think I should have learned in leader training, but didn’t! My question has to do with the appropriateness of a specific service project that was recently promoted by our Troop’s ASM. Our state law now makes […]
Issue 49 – April 2005
Nope, ol’ Andy here hasn’t been “on vacation,” although that’s never a bad idea! If you’re a regular reader, you know that our Website’s server “died” and our estimable and stalwart Webmaster, Mike Bowman, needed to find a replacement and then get it up and running. He’s been successful (in large part thanks to readers […]

Dear Andy, I’m a Webelos Den Leader, and I’d like to find a Den Chief poem so I can make him a plaque to present him at our Blue & Gold. Can you help me in locating some poems about Den Chiefs, or anything that might be along that line. (Laurel Downer, WDL, Pack 7, […]

Remember CB, the Committee Member of a Troop in New Jersey who was having some trouble with a “bullying” Scout in Mid-December? Well, there’s more… Dear Andy, To add more details and clarify what I said before, it was a Scout’s bullying that prompted his fellow Scouts to petition the Scoutmaster to have him removed […]
Issue 46 – Mid-December 2004
Dear Andy, It’s said, “Timing is everything.” I wish I’d read sooner your comprehensive response in the Mid-October 2004 “Ask Andy” series to the question, “Aren’t (Eagle) boards of review nothing more than rubber stamps?” I just went through the most uncomfortable Star BOR I’ve ever experienced. It involved a Scout, our Troop’s Senior Patrol […]
Issue 45 – December 2004
Dear Andy, In my travels as a Friends of Scouting contribution “encourager,” I’ve run into several men who were Scouts maybe fifty or so years ago, and a couple of them referred to themselves as a “Double-Eagle.” I’ve never heard of a “Double Eagle”—Do you have any idea what this means? (J.K., Patriots’ Path Council, […]
Issue 44 – November 2004
Dear Andy, I’m currently helping out with my son’s Cub Scout Den as an assistant. Meanwhile, my church is starting a new Pack, and might ask me to be a Den Leader there. Can I serve in more than one Pack? Is there any official policy that would prevent me from helping out? (Pedersenta6) Of […]
Issue 43 – Mid-October 2004
Many books and workshops on management, personal development, and so forth, talk hard about the idea of personal best.” They often recommend ”visualizing” – “If I were the best (you fill in the blank), how would I look, what would I be doing…?” I think this can apply to our volunteer lives in Scouting, but […]
